But before you leave, stop by the Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, outside of Kandy, for some tea history. Peradeniya is the birthplace of Ceylon Tea, where the first plants were brought from China in 1824. Twenty-eight years later, Scottish planter James Taylor established the first seedlings on an eight hectare plantation at the Loolecondera Estate between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. It was the success of his plantation there that led to Nuwara Eliya becoming the epicenter of the Sri Lankan tea industry.
With its cool air, magnificent waterfalls, and thriving tea culture, the enchanting allure of these hills has to be seen to believe. The drive to Sri Lanka’s “Little England” is a highlight of any trip to Sri Lanka. You will take winding roads through the gorgeously lush plantations past tea bushes trimmed by regular picking that look like green sculptures stretching up and down the misty hills as far as the eye can see. Enjoy your journey – this is the complete experience.
